The Dixie Chicks Group - Chris DELMAS / VISUAL Press Agency

The world of country music is in full examination of conscience. After the group Lady Antebellum - which renamed itself Lady A to avoid associations unfortunately with the Antebellum South, a period which evokes slavery and the American Civil War -, it is now the turn of the Dixie Chicks to be at the heart of the controversy. The reason ? The term "Dixie".

If the singers, Natalie Maines, Emily Strayer, Martie Maguire, always said that they had chosen their group name in reference to the album Dixie Chicken , of the group Little Feat, released in 1975 (and which has nothing to do with see with racism or slavery), the term "Dixie" has always been used to identify an American region which includes all the slave states which supported the Confederation, which went to war against the government during the American Civil War.

The Dixie Chicks have yet to make a statement on the subject of a possible name change, but reporter Jeremy Helligar, in Variety , made the question clear. Without giving an answer, the editorialist says that in the midst of the Black Lives Matter movement, it is time to have a discussion on the subject.

Deafening silence

“The Dixie Chicks don't have to change their names to advertise themselves, but their silence is deafening. This is a discussion that we must have, and they must be part of it, ”writes the author in his article.

The great irony, as Jeremy Helligar explains, comes from the discrepancy between this name, which evokes the deep and segregationist south, and the very liberal identity of the group, which notably opposed the war in Iraq by George W. Bush, alienating a large part of his audience in the early 2000s. A name change could allow them to clearly line up in a "camp", and regain their former glory.

The Dixie Chicks are due to release their new album, Gaslighter , in July.
