Alcatraz Island, in English Alcatraz Island, is an island located in the bay of San Francisco at 1.92 km from the port of San Francisco in California, in the Western United States. It was so named by the Spanish because it served as a refuge for many pelicans (Alcatraz is the current Spanish name for the Northern Gannet). This island hosted a military fortress for several decades (1850-1909), then a military prison (1909-1933) and a federal high security prison (1934-1963). Occupied by Native Americans from 1969 to 1971, the Alcatraz complex is now converted into a historic site managed by the United States National Park Service. It is visited each year by more than a million tourists and remains a place for bird watching on the bay.
