Dermatologists discourage the use of hydroalcoholic gel on the beach because it can cause burns, especially on sensitive skin such as that of children, and they recommend washing their hands with soap and water as a measure to avoid the spread of coronavirus .

The habit of frequently cleaning your hands with hydroalcoholic gel should be avoided on the beach, according to the dermatologist at the Hospital Quirónsalud Marbella, Marta Frieyro, who seeks the harmful effects of the sanitizing gel on the epidermis in places where you are sunbathing.

Its high percentage of alcohol, in combination with sunlight , could cause burns to the skin, says the doctor, who has indicated that special care must be taken with the most sensitive skin such as those of young children.

In the specialist's opinion, the rapid absorption of hydroalcoholic gels creates the false sensation of total evaporation in the skin because its components are thought to have completely disappeared from the epidermis.

However, "they stay on its surface for a long time", so the incidence of sunlight can lead to "a darkening of the skin at best , or a burn, at worst the cases, "he stresses.

As an alternative, Dr. Frieyro advises washing hands with soap and water, which "is a safety measure against contagion by coronavirus and does not pose a risk to the health of our epidermis."

On the other hand, the Dermatology Service of the Hospital Quirónsalud Marbella has warned of the risk of burns when sunbathing after a period of low or no outdoor exposure due to the period of confinement as a consequence of the pandemic.

The restrictions have coincided with the passage from winter to spring that this geographical area represents a gradual change in the incidence of solar radiation, so that under normal circumstances and with the social habits of life abroad, a progressive acclimatization of the skin would have occurred. of the citizen.

The dermatologist Pablo García Montero has explained that "our pigmentary system still maintains low melanin levels since it is linked to the impact of ultraviolet radiation on the skin . "

For this reason, it has emphasized the protection guidelines linked to the beginning of the summer campaign, such as avoiding direct exposure to sunlight in the middle of the day, using a high factor protection cream (SPF 30-50) and replicate it every two hours especially if you have taken a bath or perspired excessively.

He recalled that our body produces vitamin D after exposure to sunlight, a micronutrient that strengthens the immune system, in addition to being necessary for calcium absorption, and has recommended brief sun exposures complemented by a diet that includes foods such as salmon or sardines.
