The cove of Gouermel, in Plougrescant (Côtes d'Armor) had been the scene of pollution with pesticides in June 2017. - Water and rivers of Brittany

The water in Gouermel's cove was tinged with a very abnormal red color. In June 2017, significant pollution had affected the town of Plougrescant, in the Côtes d'Armor. Three years after the facts, the justice found guilty a exploitation of tomatoes of the sector. According to the association Eau et rivières de Bretagne, the owner was fined 50,000 euros, including 25,0000 euros suspended for discharges into a stream.

Very high concentrations of pollutants were noted in the natural environment in 2017: 610 mg of nitrate per liter (twelve times the standard for drinking water) and a concentration of pesticides of 12.14 µg per liter (24 times the quality standard required by regulation). According to the association, this pollution was the consequence of a “point discharge” linked to the evacuation of a nutritive solution in the rainwater network and which ended up in the neighboring stream. A practice that would be "very shared" among producers of tomatoes grown above ground, accuses Eau et rivières de Bretagne.

The association wants proof that pollution of the same nature was observed in the same watercourse a few days ago.
