• Thyssen Museum. 'Mata Mua', for sale

The Minister of Culture and Sports, José Manuel Rodríguez Uribes, has advanced his will to reach an agreement "reasonable in times of crisis" with Baroness Thyssen regarding his private collection, "including" the painting of Mata Mua by Paul Gauguin that he has export duty.

"I am going to ask the Baroness to make a technical assessment by experts, also by the curators of the Thyssen Museum, of the approximate value of the private collection ," said the minister during his speech at the New Forum Economy.

However, Uribes has reiterated the importance of "taking into account the new reality" to resume negotiations for the collection. "We are not in the previous situation of last year, but in a more difficult and complex economic situation. I offer my will to reach a good agreement, including the Mata Mua ' , it is important," he said.

In this sense, he has highlighted the importance of valuing the collection "as it is now", adding that "if Mata Mua returns , much better. But then you have to attend to the real economic conditions in Spain to assume a private collection in this context of crisis, "he stressed.

In any case, he explained that the Thyssen collection "nobody is going to touch it", since it is a matter related to the property of Carmen Cervera, and also stressed that no firm decision has yet been made. " There is nothing irreversible in life except death," he has ironized.

The minister has clarified that it was last December when the exit authorization was given for four paintings from the Baroness's collection - in addition to Mata Mua , for three others by Monet, Degàs and Hopper -. "It is true that the Mata Mua is due to administrative silence, but we jurists know that it has validity effects in all consequences," he indicated.

"I find that reality in January, which occurs at the time of the pandemic, and now in de-escalation because we will have to resume negotiations. But everything done in the past is a perfectly correct decision in law, because it is private property," concluded.

LEWIS HAMILTON AND LOS TOROS

On the other hand, the minister has also addressed other current issues such as the criticism of Lewis Hamilton, Formula One driver, to bullfighting. "It is an excessive phrase, I am not talking about having to have a reverential respect or a fear (to have an opinion) about bullfighting, but a respect for people and the laws," he said.

Thus, he recalled that as a minister he has to apply laws "regardless of personal taste." "You have to be in force and that is what I am going to do: anything other than that would be inappropriate behavior on my part. We must start from respect and recognize each other in the freedom of opinion, but do it with respect and without attacking ", he pointed out.

In this sense, he has reiterated that bullfighting has been included among the responsibilities of the Ministry of Culture and Sports since 2010 and there are also laws that "establish this cultural recognition". In addition, he has explained the position of other ministers belonging to Podemos. "They want to defend the protection of animals and the duty of respect for animals and we are all there," he said.

For the return of fans of bullfighting shows, Uribes has detailed that they will have "the same rule" as the rest of public shows. Thus, for the 'new normality', the capacity of 30% and 50% are removed and it will be the autonomous communities that will decide, together with the Health criteria, the events to be held - always respecting the distance of 1.5 meters and the use mask-.

THE MACROCONCERTS, IN DIFFICULTIES

On the contrary, Uribes is not convinced that macro music concerts can be held. "This is what there are as rules and they are reasonable. One has difficulty imagining the celebration of a macro-concert, I do not see it from the sense of prudence, but that will be decided by the Autonomous Communities," he asserted.

The minister recalled that "productive talks" have been held with the Ministry of Consumer Affairs to address those public events that must be suspended. "It is intended that there be a certain balance in the repayment terms or other options: bonuses or cancel now and postpone in time so that they can be held later," he said.

Uribes has insisted that he will seek to give " a clear priority " in this legislature to the completion of the Artist's Statute and also contemplates the Patronage Law. "Surely a great state law is missing, but you have to think about it calmly and make sense," he concluded.
