An amateur fisherman found a stone carving of a Gothic-looking Virgin who was semi-submerged in a low-flow area on a section of the Sar river as he passed through the Compostela neighborhood of Conxo .

The Minister of Culture, Román Rodríguez, and the Mayor of Santiago, Xosé Sánchez Bugallo, supervised this Monday the start of recovery work of this size, accompanied by officials from the Association for the Defense of the Galician Cultural Heritage (Apatrigal), who reported their finding after the man who located her contacted one of its members.

The carving will be transferred once it is taken out of the river to the Museo das Peregrinations in Santiago , where it will be deposited and studied in depth to determine its heritage value.

The head of Culture has thanked the "close collaboration and diligence" in Apatrigal's procedure when communicating the finding, something that guarantees "the integrity of the piece" in its transfer for study.

A GOTHIC VIRGIN

The piece is a carving of a round bundle representing a seated Virgin with the child Jesus, surrounded by two angels. The first considerations of the specialists who have examined the work, made of granite, suggest that it could fit into the Galician Gothic style, which dates from around the 14th century .

The sculpture is carved on four of its five faces, which could indicate that it was a suspended piece designed to be placed on the wall . This idea is reinforced by the fact that the only uncarved face is the back, since even the base piece is decorated with a four-petal flower and intertwined acanthus leaves, something that rules out that it was supported on another element.

Above the image of the Virgin and Child are two rather worn angels , although the face and hand of each one of them holding an object or the cloak itself can be seen. Also, both the Virgin's face and the child's head have disappeared, an "ancient impact" given the wear of the edges that could have to do with an intentional break to desecrate the piece.
