  • Since the beginning of deconfinement, the very strict health protocol imposed on schools only allowed to welcome a maximum of 15 students per class in primary school. It will be reduced from June 22.
  • More than a pedagogical interest, this return to class has mainly a psychological interest.

They will have class for two weeks. "As of tomorrow in France and overseas, the crèches, schools, colleges are preparing to welcome from June 22 all students in a compulsory manner and according to the normal presence rules," announced Sunday the president of the République Emmanuel Macron during an address giving an update on deconfinement.

A long-awaited decision that was desired by the Minister of Education. Asked Wednesday on RTL, he was also very confident about the simplification of health rules in schools and colleges: "We will probably do it," he said. Because only this simplification of the rules allowed a more massive return of students to class.

"This is good news for all parents"

Several questions arise following this announcement. First, why is the government sending students to class for only two weeks? Answer: since deconfinement, only 50% of students have been able to return to school, according to the latest figures from the ministry, but sometimes only one day per week. In secondary school, "30% of middle school students" have resumed, most often partially, said Jean-Michel Blanquer on Wednesday. And as the students used to take up the principle of volunteering, it was not necessarily those who needed it most academically who came back. From June 22, parents will no longer have the choice of putting them back in school or not.

School principals, on the front line of back-to-school management, said they were “tired” of being caught between government directives to welcome as many students as possible, a health protocol that prevents it and the will of the parents. In addition, the pressure from parents and businesses has increased in recent weeks. As the figures for the epidemic decline, the need to return to a slightly more normal life is felt and economic imperatives have returned to the forefront. "This is good news for all parents who since May 11, wish to return to school children," reacted this Sunday Rodrigo Arenas, president of the FCPE, the first federation of parents of students on BFMTV.

The health protocol will not be repealed, but streamlined

If the pedagogical interest in bringing the pupils back for two weeks is low, this return could bring them positive effects on a personal level: "It is psychologically important for the pupils, because they will be able to find their comrades and their teachers, even for a few days ”, indicates to 20 Minutes the entourage of the Minister of Education this Sunday evening.

Another question: will the health protocol currently in force be completely repealed? No, explains to 20 Minutes , the Ministry of Education, it will only be lightened. And the terms will be specified at the beginning of the week, a meeting being planned with the trade union organizations this Monday. This means that if the maximum quota of 15 students per class in primary will be lifted, certain rules will remain in force. No doubt the wearing of the mask will remain compulsory for the teaching team and the middle school students.

More distance education for teachers

On the teachers' side, this compulsory takeover of students from June 22 also makes sense. This means that they will no longer have to provide distance education. And this comeback in establishments will allow them to prepare for their return to school. But we already know that not all the teachers will be present on June 22, some being physically vulnerable.

It remains to be seen why all the high school students do not also resume class on June 22. Several reasons explain this: "He has a lot of brewing in high school," says the ministry. Furthermore, if several studies have shown that children are not very vectors of the virus, it is much less clear for older adolescents. High school students, more independent in their work and better equipped in terms of IT, also took more online courses than middle school students. Finally, the final year students already know if they have had their bac or not. But this difference in treatment between school, college and high school is likely to provoke criticism from the teachers' unions.
