"Red mud", from bauxite residue, near Gardanne, in the Bouches-du-Rhône, October 8, 2010 - Anne-Christine Poujoulat AFP

An imminent victory for the opponents of the red mud. The Administrative Court of Appeal dismissed the appeal from several associations after the exemption granted by the prefect of Bouches-du-Rhône for discharges into the sea from the Altéo factory in Gardanne. It had granted the manufacturer a six-year exemption to comply with the environmental standards for these discharges.

“The industrialist has undertaken works, in particular the construction of a biological treatment plant which will allow him to reach the standard. This station will be put into operation within two months maximum, after having encountered delay due to confinement. This dismissal confirms the implementation of these solutions to finally meet the standard, ”explains Pierre Aplincourt, president of France Nature Environnement Paca at 20 Minutes .

Go further

The association welcomes this progress, but remains vigilant. "We want the industrialist to go further, with an internal recycling of these discharges, without going into the sea," he continues.

The association will also ensure “compliance with the requirements defined by the prefectural decrees for the Mange-Garri site in order to limit the flight of dust and pollution of aquatic environments by runoff water, and the pursuit of feasibility studies for the re-use, without danger to populations, of manufacturing waste ”. The Altéo factory, recently placed in receivership, is currently looking for buyers.
