If there is one thing that JK Rowling should not regret, it is undoubtedly to have left her ex-husband. The author of the Harry Potter saga revealed this week that she had been the victim of sexual assault and domestic violence at the hands of Jorge Arantes, the father of Jessica, his eldest daughter, which did not more in the main interested. The latter agreed to respond to the British tabloid The Sun, not to make amends… but to declare that he had absolutely no regrets for having raised his hand on the writer during their marriage.
The reason for this lack of remorse? "I slapped Joanne, but it was not permanent abuse", he launched, adding in the process: "I am not sorry to have slapped her". The former television journalist also seems to consider that slapping someone is not hitting him, since he minimizes: "I did not hit him".
Trauma
Jorge Arantes describes his relationship with JK Rowling as "intense and passionate", "either it was heaven or it was hell". The tabloid recounts a violent event, which occurred before their marriage, during which the police had to intervene. The ex-husband of JK Rowling camped on his position. He admits having slapped her the day she left. "She refused to leave without Jessica, even if I said that she could come and pick her up the next day. There was a violent confrontation. I dragged her out of the house at 5 am and I admit, I slapped her very hard in the street, ”he said.
I am not RTing The Sun front page but I really hope that wherever you stand on JK Rowling you can see that this headline is violence to a woman written in the words of a perpetrator. It is just more misogyny and it makes me sick Solidarity to survivors everywhere
- suzanne moore (@suzanne_moore) June 11, 2020In revealing that she was the victim of domestic violence, JK Rowling wrote: "I have a visceral sense of terror in which trans women will have spent their last seconds on earth, because I too have experienced moments of blind fear when I realized that the only thing that kept me alive was the restraint of my attacker. (...) I have never spoken publicly about the fact that I myself survived domestic violence and sexual assault. It is not because I am ashamed that these things happened to me, but because it is traumatic to come back to it and to remember. I am also concerned about protecting my daughter from my first marriage. "
Scandal against the front page of the Sun
The Sun's choice to publish the version of JK Rowling's ex-husband on the front page caused the scandal across the Channel, in particular from associations defending victims of domestic abuse.
At a time of reported increased rates of #domesticabuse and terrifying uncertainty for so many women, @TheSun has chosen to amplify the voice of a perpetrator. There are no excuses for abuse. We, proudly, stand on the side of survivors.
