• Catalonia: Investigate if there was a crime against fauna in the death of the Cachou bear
  • Fauna: the other side of confinement: brown bears return to the Spanish mountains

The NGO Sea Shepherd announced on Thursday a reward of 10,000 euros to identify the person responsible for the death of a brown bear shot dead in Ariège . The species is critically endangered in France.

This sum is offered "to motivate those who have information to advance the investigation," according to a press release. "The information will be passed to the authorities in charge of the case and the reward will be paid if the testimony leads to the accusation of the culprit," explains Sea Shepherd.

"The last Pyrenean bear, Canelle , was killed by a hunter in 2004," recall the NGO and its president Lamya Essemlali , who calls for "exemplary and dissuasive sanctions."

The NGO already offered 10,000 euros in 2019 after the discovery of two decapitated seals in Brittany. The information allowed the prosecution of two sailors, accused of attacking this protected species.

" Rewild (an association of which Sea Shepherd is co-founder) will also file a complaint," the press release said. The gala minister of Ecological Transition , Elisabeth Borne , added that the State could also join the complaint.

The second bear appeared dead in the Pyrenees this year

The shot bear, a young male, is the second found dead in the Pyrenees this year, when the population totals only about 50 individuals, which does not guarantee the survival of the species. The growth of the ursina population in the Pyrenees, after the repopulation that began in 1991, has fueled for years the tensions with the shepherds, who consider that their presence is incompatible with their activity.

France adopted a "bear plan" for 2018-2028 that foresees further bear releases, but the government buried it just a few months after its establishment following protests by ranchers.

In 2019, 1,173 animals died from bear attacks and 36 hives were destroyed, according to figures stemming from a recently launched public consultation for measures to scare brown bears in the Pyrenees. Pastoralism represents hundreds of thousands of animals in the Pyrenees. Last week, the Ministers of Ecological and Inclusive Transition and Agriculture announced a € 500,000 allocation to promote the coexistence of bears and grazing.
