The "Magic: The Gathering" card game. - Charles Sykes / AP / SIPA

The decision was made in the wake of the anti-racist movement sparked by the death of George Floyd in the United States. Wizards of the Coast, the publisher of Magic playing cards , the reference for role-playing enthusiasts for more than a quarter of a century, announced Wednesday that it has removed several images and a card containing racist allusions from its database. He also prohibited its use in official tournaments.

Magic: The Gathering  is a card game set in a fantasy world. Players compete in a role-playing game, with cards allowing you to cast spells, summon creatures, and perform certain actions. The game contains thousands of cards and new ones are added every year. But some of them, which date back to the early days of the game, were problematic.

"Racism (...) has no place in our games"

This is the case with the "Invoke prejudice" card. Its drawing is inspired by racist imagery (it shows an executor armed with an ax and wearing a pointed hooded outfit in black color) and it is used to trigger an action based on the color of the creatures of the players. And in the official database, it had been registered with an address ending in 1.488, a notorious rallying sign for white supremacists and other neo-Nazis.

Other cards, notably "Crusade" ("crusade"), "Jihad" or "Pradesh Gypsies", also dating from the beginnings of the game, have had their drawings replaced in the official database by the following message: "We have removed the image from this map of our database because of its representation, its text or a combination of racist factors. Racism, whatever its form, has no place in our games, or elsewhere. ”
