Two new cases of new coronavirus were detected among sailors of the French aircraft carrier Charles-de-Gaulle, said Wednesday the maritime prefecture of Toulon, two months after an epidemic on board which had affected more than a thousand sailors.

"It was a sailor who had symptoms of Covid-19 on board Friday who tested positive," said a spokeswoman for the maritime prefecture of Toulon, confirming information from the regional daily Var-Matin .

A thousand cases

Among the thirty contacts identified - on board and ashore - of this sailor, only one had tested positive on Wednesday evening, "a sailor who had already been tested positive during the first episode," she added. The maritime prefecture considers that "a priori the first sailor contracted the virus outside".

In April, almost two thirds of the nuclear aircraft carrier's crew, or 1,046 sailors out of 1,760, had tested positive. Two of them had to be treated in intensive care. "We are very vigilant but we want to be reassuring for families and sailors, after this difficult episode: no one is seriously ill this time," said the maritime prefecture.

Since June 2, said the spokeswoman, the majority of the crew of the aircraft carrier returned to the building, and work "in two planks that do not cross". "They wear masks, are maximum four per room and the common areas have been closed," says the prefecture.
