Thousands of turtles filmed by drones in the Australian Ocean - 20 Minutes

It is the first time that such a spectacle has been observed in this way. Images, taken by drones in December 2019 and released on Wednesday, show thousands of sea turtles off the northern tip of Australia.

Australian scientists specializing in the protection of endangered species have discovered that they had underestimated the number of turtles living in the largest nesting site in the world, Raine Island.

60,000 female turtles listed

Until then, researchers counted turtles by the time they arrived on the beaches, about 23,000 in one night. In order to better follow them in the ocean, they then marked them with a non-toxic soluble paint stroke.

In total, around 60,000 green female turtles have been identified thanks to the images of these drones. Each year, they come to lay eggs there after having traveled hundreds of kilometers from the Great Barrier Reef.
