Among the activities disrupted by the coronavirus, international travel has fallen sharply in recent weeks. At the same time as the dramatic drop in air traffic, travel restrictions have increased. The reopening of borders is currently under discussion in the European Union.

The European Commission recommended Thursday that all travel restrictions within the European Union and the Schengen area be lifted on June 15, and that the EU's external borders be reopened on July 1 to travelers from the Balkans westerners. The question of quarantine (or “fourteen” in the case of the coronavirus) worries several readers:

"My son is coming back from Canada, should he be in the fortnight?" »Gomez

“I come back from Morocco where I have just spent three months. Do I have to confine myself? »Denis

Here are the answers we found:

A voluntary isolation.  The two cases mentioned by our readers concern countries outside Europe. Since May 25, travelers returning to France from countries outside the EU (or the United Kingdom, Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marino, Switzerland and the Vatican) are asked to respect a “voluntary quarantine” of 14 days at home or in a dedicated structure, according to their choice. Certain exceptional cases, like a "compelling family reason", allow to avoid it, on condition of not presenting symptoms of Covid-19, specifies the ministry for Foreign Affairs on its site.

In principle, no quarantine return from a European country.  When you return to France from a European country, this "voluntary quarantine" is not requested. Why ? The “epidemiological situations” are close in the EU and the management of the crisis is “coordinated”.

The Spanish and British cases.  On the other hand, France imposed reciprocity on Spain and promised to do the same towards the United Kingdom which requires a fortnight. Clearly, since these countries impose restrictions on the French on their arrival on their soil, Paris applies restrictions to all people coming from these countries. In fact, they are simply "asked" to submit to "voluntary quarantine".

Convenient. On its "travel advice" page, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs details for each country the travel restrictions taken by each country, in the context of the fight against the epidemic.
