• Culture: Guirao's heritage to Uribes

Mata mua , the Paul Gauguin canvas exhibited since 1999 by the Thyssen Bornemisza National Museum in Madrid, has been on sale since last April, when the Ministry of Culture authorized its owner, Carmen Thyssen to export it . The work, as reported by El País , is no longer shown in the rooms of the Thyssen, which reopened its doors on Saturday.

Along with Mata mua , three very relevant pictures have already come out of the Thyssen: Racing Horses in a Landscape (1894), by Degas; Martha Mckeen of Wellfleet (1944), by Edwars Hopper, and The Charing Cross Bridge (1899), by Monet.

A bit of context: when Baron Thyssen sold his art collection, the base of the museum that bears his surname, to the Kingdom of Spain, he reserved the ownership of a series of works that he would transfer to the State according to an agreement whose successive renovations have it has been the source of a thousand conflicts since then. Last year, according to El País , Thyssen's widow and heir raised with the Ministry of Culture her need to sell part of her collection to recover from her financial problems. The Ministry, which has to give permission for any export of relevant works of art, negotiated with the Baroness the departure of the paintings by Monet, Hopper and Degas, but agreed to keep Mata mua , valued at 40 million euros. In exchange, the State would pay seven million euros a year for 15 years for the exhibition rights of the paintings in her personal collection.

Then, the formation of the Government egg meant the departure of Jose Guirao from the Ministry of Culture and his replacement by José Manuel Rodríguez Uribes. At that time, the baroness undid the agreement and obtained an export permit from the new team. An anecdote shows the importance of Gauguin's painting in the legacy of Baron Thyssen: his widow's yacht carries the name of Mata mua .
