  • In Toulouse, young people celebrate deconfinement without moderation.
  • The Samu points to an alarming number of serious ethyl comas.
  • A binge drinking vodka / whiskey cocktail does a lot of damage during private parties, often in reinvested second homes.

After the great confinement, the great relaxation. In Toulouse, rediscovered freedom rhymes with giant aperitifs and express alcoholic drinks. And not just Thursday and the weekend, as before. "It is still annoying at a time when everyone is trying not to get sick to put themselves voluntarily in such states", laments Vincent Bounes, the director of Samu 31.

Its teams observe "for ten days" a large explosion of "serious ethyl comas", up to "ten care per night on average". Their characteristic is that they concern young people from 16 to 22 years old, "even very young people, sometimes as young as 15 years old". Some of them end up not only in the emergency room but "intubated, in intensive care".

Parties in second homes

The classic post-deconfinement case is a call for help, "in the middle of the night", from a second home that has been unoccupied for several weeks and where private parties are organized by young people "who have little idea of their limits and are also probably celebrating the end of the school year ". With trendy alcohols for the return of binge drinking, "mainly vodka and whiskey".

Often, it is the friends who notify the emergency services. "Despite the bad behavior, there remains this good reflex there", underlines Vincent Bounes.

The Samu also intervenes in the street, alerted by passers-by who find young people lying inanimate. "With the risks of theft, brawls, accidents, sexual assault for girls as for boys that this entails," insists the doctor.

"Celebrating deconfinement is natural, but not by drinking half a liter of vodka in five minutes"

In the generation above, in 25-35 year olds, no initiation rite like binge drinking, but an unusual appetite for a mixture of alcohol and synthetic drugs.

Our file on the coronavirus

Witnesses every night of avoidable damage, Vincent Bounes launches a general call for moderation. "We must collectively be right," he says. Celebrating deconfinement is natural, but not by drinking half a liter of vodka in five minutes. "
