• In 2019, Zahara and the fifty Spanish beaches that lose the blue flag
  • In 2018, Spain added 696 blue flags, one of them in Madrid

Spain has obtained a total of 688 blue flags (589 beaches, 98 marinas and five in sustainable tourist boats) that will fly from June on the Spanish coast, which is 19 more than last year, being the Valencian Community leader in number of blue flag beaches this year, although the most significant increase occurred in Andalusia.

In this way, Spain, with 23 more beaches and four fewer ports , has maintained its international leadership uninterrupted since 1987. Although more than 100 blue flags have been flying in Spain for more than 10 years, 10 Spanish beaches have released their blue flag this summer.

Of the blue flags awarded, Spain has maintained a percentage of around 15% . Thus, although only one in five (18.4%) of Spanish beaches will fly the Blue Flag this summer, around one in seven blue flags that fly in the world will do so on the Spanish coast.

They follow Spain in this classification at the international level, Greece (514), Turkey (508), France (507), Italy (482) and Portugal (387) . The 2020 Blue Flag International Jury, with the participation, among others, of the United Nations Organizations for Tourism (UNWTO) and the Environment (UNEP), has awarded Blue Flags to 45 countries in the Northern Hemisphere.

Of the 662 Blue Flag candidate beaches in Spain in 2020, 589 have been awarded. This means that 89% of the blue flag beaches are awarded.

SAFETY WILL BE ESSENTIAL

In the presentation event held online this Tuesday, the Secretary of State for Tourism, Isabel Oliver, assured that the Spanish coastline maintains high quality standards, which further strengthens the image of Spain as a leading tourist destination and as the country most competitive in the world.

"Health security this year is going to be essential. This year it will not be enough that our beaches have easy and safe accesses or that there are first aid teams and first responders. This year we have to offer extra security to residents and tourists ", Oliver explained, remembering that at the moment it is pending validation by the Ministry of Health of a guide for the reduction of contagion by Covid-19 on beaches.

Oliver explained that on the Spanish beaches "there is no danger" for this summer and that the most important thing to keep in mind in this summer season will be both the control of capacity and the social distancing. "The objective is to reduce risks of contagion and I am sure that we are going to achieve it," said the secretary of state.
