  • Summer Spain, the country with the most hotel reservations in the world

The fight to save the summer season is leading the tourism sector to launch all kinds of incentives to attract travelers. Refunds of airline tickets, family travel bonuses, previously unthinkable discounts, free hotel nights, tax deductions ... These are some of the proposals.

Resident fee on flights to the islands

Both the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands want to attract tourists from the peninsula, fearing that they would rather stay inland than put the sea in between. For this reason, the Balearic Executive as well as different associations of hotel businessmen in addition to the Balearic Association of Travel Agencies (Aviba) have proposed to the Government that Spaniards visiting the archipelago obtain a 75% discount on airline tickets such as the one have the residents on the islands. The Canarian Government and agents of the tourist sector share the request for this type of subsidy.

The future of tourism in Spain

In Spain, hoteliers, restaurateurs, municipalities, airline managers and other managers in the tourism sector are working to offer attractive proposals to tourists. In this sense, digital forums such as The post-crisis tourism sector of the coronavirus stand out, which will take place on June 11 from 12:00 to 13:00 with the support of Banco Santander. The objective is to approach the future of tourism and the changes linked to the pandemic from all points of view.

Among them the attraction of tourists will be analyzed. In this sense, the Spanish Association of Hotel and Restaurant Directors and Managers (AEDH) and different autonomous communities such as the Canary Islands, Andalusia, Catalonia and the Balearic Islands have asked for a family voucher to be created to travel within the country that is deducted 100% in the income statement. It could be used to pay for hotel stays or agency holidays. The Alliance for Competitive Tourism (Competur) also requests to introduce consumer vouchers in hospitality establishments with tax advantages, while asking that the restaurant ticket be deducted.

Family travel vouchers

Italy was one of the first countries to offer vacation vouchers of up to 500 euros so that families could go on vacation this summer, although they are valid throughout the year. The tax deductible credit is granted by the State to be invested in hotel or tourist accommodation reservations. For this, it is necessary that the family is made up of three or more members. For their part, couples without children will receive 300 euros and a single person, 150. 80% of that amount is discounted from the price of the stay and the other 20% through tax deductions.

Airline ticket refunds

Both Sicily and Japan are considering the possibility of reimbursing part of the plane expenses for tourists traveling to their destinations. In the case of the Mediterranean island, it would be willing to pay up to half the price , while the Japanese country has not specified under what conditions it would do so. The director of his Tourism Agency, Hiroshi Tabata, has announced that the Government has a budget of 11,500 million euros to pay part of the expenses of Japanese tourists.

Free hotel nights

Sicily is not only considering paying half the cost of a flight to attract tourists, but also considering the possibility of covering a third of hotel expenses. Her idea is to finance the third night of the stay. They are not the only measures. In addition, it will distribute free tickets to museums and archaeological sites on the island. Everything, in order to recover part of the 1,000 million euros in income that Sicily has lost in these pandemic months.

Japan, for its part, has announced that the Government has a budget of 11,500 million euros to revive tourism, which has been reduced by 99.9% in recent months. To do this, it shuffles to reimburse part of the plane ticket of the travelers who visit them, although it has not specified the conditions. At the moment, it only applies to local travelers, since the country is not yet open to international tourism. We would have to wait until July.

Offers in hotels and inns

At the moment, Spain is already leading the world ranking of reservations for hotel stays in the world for this summer. Even so, the offers of hotels, rural houses and tourist accommodation are repeated by the main travel portals such as Hotels.com, Edreams, Logitravel or Rumbo , as well as in the chains themselves ( from Vincci Hoteles to NH, Barceló or Room Mate ) to try to attract the largest number of travelers. Five-star hotels for the price of three? Some even reach 80% of the initial price or opt for a free third night.

In the case of the Paradores network, they have launched a reopening offer of 65 euros per room , since all their accommodation will open their doors on June 25 . In addition, throughout the tourism sector we are committed to greater flexibility when making a reservation against possible cancellations and returns.

Four-day work weeks

New Zealand has launched another original proposal to incentivize travel: launch four-day work weeks to promote both domestic tourism and the country's economy. Its Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, is studying the idea with employers in the sector so that they can assess the possibility of reducing the working day, which would allow them to have more free time promoting tourism within the country, as well as family and life balance. away from home after so much time of confinement.
