  • The health crisis linked to the coronavirus should favor tourism in France during the next weekends and this summer.
  • To inspire you a bit for your holidays,  20 Minutes  has chosen five hikes or bike tours to discover around Bordeaux
  • The least motivated, the most athletic or the smallest can leave, in one day, to discover the vineyards, the historical or architectural heritage and, of course, the beaches of the coast.

After almost two months of confinement it is time to stretch your legs. While the government has announced that the holidays should take place mainly in France, 20 Minutes has put together a list of hikes and bike rides to do near Bordeaux, by the day. Wide beaches, mysteries of the Gironde estuary, vineyards and hillsides are to be discovered from the Médoc to the Bassin d'Arcachon.

The Boucle de la Réole, nearly 28 kilometers along the Garonne

Being able to make a loop of 27.6 km of walking is rare, around Bordeaux. And the circuit of La Réole is perfect for spending a day far from the city which should, from July, be filled with its tourists. Here there are no ocean beaches, hikers start from the outskirts of the Garonne (La Réole station thirty-five minutes from Bordeaux) to follow the canal, its bridges and its locks, over several kilometers. If the author of these lines remembers well, there are several nifty little villages hidden in the vineyards such as Hure, as so many opportunities to discover regional products. According to the Helloways website, the walk ends in seven hours. Allow a good hour more with the picnic, gourmet stops and the arrival with the sunset on the Garonne.

The Roger-Lapébie track, the Tour de France stage

We would like to thank our colleague, a bike lover, who made us discover this four-hour route (for the fastest) which criss-crosses the hillsides of the right bank of the Metropolis. "The track is pleasant, a little narrow but runs along an old railway track and takes us through beautiful villages before reaching Sauveterre-de-Guyenne", he promises us. Not false. The outing is family-friendly even if you have to hug to let the most equipped cyclists pass. We are still on the Roger-Lapébie track, winner of the 1937 Tour de France. Departing from Bordeaux (directly to the right after the Pierre bridge), it takes five to six kilometers before joining Latresne and starting the cycle track. You will then have to climb a little to reach Cénac and… take a first break at the famous Bistrot de la Pimpine.

In Sadirac, the station has been transformed into an Environment House. Further, you will have to stop to discover Créon, a medieval country house founded in 1316, or the Sauve-Majeure abbey, the Quarries of Frontenac or the hospital commandery of Sallebruneau. In short, a trip to the dense cultural and natural heritage, tour de France style. Once Sauveterre is reached (at km 57), the return takes place by the same hill road.

The Bourgailh walk, between nature and architecture

On the program of this 15.4 km walk in the forest, paved paths, picnic facilities and a super observatory to observe the surrounding flora and fauna. But also, at the heart of the Bourgailh ecosite, one of the now unavoidable peri-urban refuges of the Metropolis. There, Yvan Detraz, of Bruit du frigo, imagined the hollow Tron, a shelter in the shape of a tree trunk, in steel and wood, as forgotten there after a cut of giant trees. The shelters are not yet open, Covid-19 obliges, but according to the website reservations (free) for overnight stays should reopen by the end of June.

Practical, the loop starts at the Camponac-Médiathèque stop (tram B). Vacationers and Bordeaux fans of the carless are served. This hike is more family friendly, children will find something to climb trees and feed their imagination. And before enjoying the outdoors and the calm of the "magnificent natural area of Bourgailh", according to the Helloways site, you can discover the Cité Frugès Le Corbusier, in Pessac. Four hours of walking, between nature and architecture.

The Gironde estuary tour, gourmet cycling

Moulis, Margaux, Pauillac, etc. We are not far from Bordeaux, in the heart of the vineyards on the famous Médoc wine route. It is impossible to offer five outings without stopping between castles and vineyards. This tour of the Gironde estuary departs from the Citadel of Blaye, less than 60 km north of Bordeaux. Just cross the estuary by ferry (timetables are here) and reach Le Verdon and the ocean coast. The return is by the same cycle path, but the most motivated can cross the estuary again by boat and push to Royan (Charente-Maritime). They will return by the "green route" which runs along the coast of Haute-Saintonge, then Haute-Gironde, its golden cliffs, its squares and its plots of Cognac and Pineau.

This journey alternates cycle paths and small roads with reliefs that are sometimes quite sturdy. Stopovers are welcome to take a dip in Talmont, taste oysters, enjoy the Côte de Blaye or discover the lamprey or the cave dwellings of Meschers-sur-Gironde. This tour of the Estuary can be divided into sections of 30 to 40 km per day. So why not leave for a week, with the backpack?

The famous but essential Vélodyssée

The European route EV1, also called the Vélodyssée, runs along the Atlantic coast for more than 1,200 km. The routes are varied, the stages more than numerous. The most popular is perhaps the one leaving from Sainte-Nazaire to join Bordeaux. Snob, 20 Minutes invites you to leave from Lacanau to reach the Bassin d'Arcachon.

Along an 80 km course, mainly on a shaded cycle path with the smell of pines for a traveling companion, you will discover the Dune du Pila, the ornithological area of Teich, the Winter City of Arcachon or the Landes de Gascogne forest. The most trained can continue to Biarritz, the others return by train to Bordeaux.
