- Our statues, street names and public places reflect a past time, Khan says, and clarify that some statues will be picked down.

- It is an uncomfortable truth that our country and our city have achieved much of their wealth through the slave trade.

On Sunday, protesters protesting racism tore down a statue of Edward Colston in Bristol, western England. Colston became a wealthy man in the 17th century by trading with slaves from West Africa.

The case has sparked heated debate in the UK. High-ranking rulers, including Prime Minister Boris Johnson, condemn illegal destruction, but at the same time show an understanding of the wrath of racism.

Britain long participated in the cruel but very lucrative transatlantic slave trade until 1807 when the country banned that business. Slavery itself was outlawed since the British Empire in 1833.
