A 45-year-old man was arrested and was, on Tuesday, still in police custody after the discovery of the body of his former partner in Périgny, near La Rochelle (Charente-Maritime). The man is suspected of a "criminal act to the prejudice of his former partner", aged 47, whose body was found Sunday in his former home, according to the prosecutor's office in La Rochelle.

The victim "did not die a natural death," added the prosecution without wanting to give more details on the circumstances of the death. An autopsy must be performed on Wednesday.

The case brings to at least 28 the number of alleged femicides since the beginning of the year, according to an AFP count. In 2019, Agende France Presse identified at least 126 cases of women killed by their partner or ex, i.e. an woman every three days on average.
