Neem, new contributor to the reading group "20 Minutes Books", recommends Miss Fallonbeat  by Dauran Marek, published on December 3, 2019 at Éditions Maïa.

His favorite quote:

“Once upon a time, it showed through. Once upon a time, there was the gloss, the sequins and the 12-cm heels. The man had his look of incomprehension frozen in his. His hand, still stuck on fault XY. Meeting of the third type. "You're a guy, for God's sake! No I am a women ! "

Why this book?

  • Because this book does not take itself seriously. It is defined as an offset thriller and the bet is successful! The intrigue keeps us in suspense until the end and it's completely crazy!
  • Because it is written a bit like a script and everything comes off the beaten track.
  • Because the curious can explore an unknown world. And we are all a little curious or voyeurs!
  • Because the characters are raw formwork.
  • Because we want more (and that clearly implies a sequel)!

The essential in 2 minutes

The intrigue.  Murders are committed in the night world, in LGBT establishments. A police inspector investigates.

Characters.  Miss Fallonbeat: charismatic transgender character around which the other characters revolve. Marylin: the stooge, the friend you can't count on. Alex Hirsche: judicial police officer who discovers this world at the same time as the reader.

Places.  An urban universe, LGBT entertainment and meeting establishments.

The time.  This is allegedly happening today, although we have no time indication.

The author.  Dauran Marek is a young Breton teacher who writes under pseudonym, an author who writes the real, the real, the trash. It projects a harsh light onto shameful imperfections, hidden behind the varnish of appearances. Miss Fallonbeat is her first published novel.

This book was read with  attachment for the characters: we wish them good or misfortunes. The completely offbeat universe arouses laughter where the tone is grave, serious. The catchy rhythm, carried by a nervous writing, makes us addicted.
