The World Health Organization (WHO) published this Sunday a document to help countries identify people who have died from Covid-19, the disease that causes the new coronavirus, in which those killed by This causes both if they have tested positive in a laboratory test and the suspects.

Likewise, the agency indicates that those whose cause of death is not related to the coronavirus, such as a car accident or cancer, or who have died after having fully recovered should not be considered deceased by Covid-19. of the illness.

In this sense, the WHO establishes that Covid-19 must be registered in the medical certificate of death as a cause of death in all those who have lost their lives as a result of the disease, or who have a certain suspicion that the infection contributed to his death.

Furthermore, and due to the existence of "multiple coronaviruses" that affect people, the WHO recommends using the word 'Covid-19' on death certificates since, as explained in the report, it helps to reduce the uncertainty generated in the classification of death and, therefore, to correctly control all deaths related to the virus.

For example, as exemplified in the text, it should be reported that a patient has died of acute respiratory distress syndrome due to pneumonia caused by Covid-19. Similarly, WHO requests that the time interval from symptom onset to death be reported.

Similarly, the United Nations agency recalls that people with chronic pathologies (such as diabetes or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) or compromised immune systems have a higher risk of death due to Covid-19, and therefore highlights the need to incorporate into the death certificate that there was suspicion, or was confirmed, that the patient was infected with Covid-19.

The WHO also counts women whose pregnancy was complicated by the infection and ultimately died as Covid-19 deaths , as well as patients with HIV and infected with the new coronavirus. On the contrary, the WHO advises against counting as deceased by Covid-19 people who, even being infected, have died from a car accident, a heart attack or cancer.

HELP KNOW THE IMPACT OF COVID-19

However, the WHO stresses the importance of notifying patients who have died with Covid-19 and that the virus caused fatal pneumonia. "As many details as possible should be included from medical records or laboratory tests," says the WHO in the report.

In this sense, it establishes two categories to incorporate in the reports: the 'U07.1', in which the deceased confirmed by Covid-19 will be incorporated and that the disease has been the cause of death, and the 'U07. 2 ', which will show people with suspicions of having died as a consequence of the infection caused by the new coronavirus.

The WHO asks countries to report all deaths due to Covid-19 on a weekly basis, differentiating the deceased in sex and age group and informing about the place and date of death, whether or not a test was performed to confirm the presence virus, ethnicity, profession and place of residence.

Finally, and with respect to the systems that show the excess mortality of the population, the WHO has indicated that it can be used to assess the impact that Covid-19 has had on general mortality, as well as the measures carried out to contain the virus transmission.

In this sense, and although it recognizes that more studies will be needed to quantify with greater precision the mortality caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the WHO ensures that the records of excess mortality can be used to compare the observed death rates by age and sex during the health crisis, with respect to the mortality rates expected in other situations, such as armed conflicts or natural disasters.
