  • Was George Floyd's death predicted by "The Simpsons"?
  • This is suggested by two illustrations which seem to have left the series and which show George Floyd kept on the ground.
  • It is actually a tribute made by an Italian artist in the Simpson style, after his death.

Have The Simpsons Hit Again? The American sitcom, which has been broadcast for more than thirty years, is indeed known to have sometimes "predicted" certain events long before they happened - like the election of Donald Trump, 16 years before it took place. , at a time when such a scenario was just a joke.

And to believe two visuals shared on social networks, the series would have this time very precisely anticipated the fatal fate of George Floyd, a black American whose death, on May 25, after a violent police arrest in Minneapolis (Minnesota) , spawned a series of anti-racism protests in the United States and around the world.

These two images, allegedly taken from an episode titled "The Day When the Violence Died" aired on March 17, 1996, show in turn George Floyd held on the ground by Clancy Wiggum, the police chief of Springfield, then Floyd in the form of an angel, while Lisa Simpson is seen in the background holding up a “Justice for George” sign.

FAKE OFF

If the style of the drawings seems straight out of an episode of The Simpsons - and that an episode was indeed broadcast under this title on March 17, 1996 -, it is actually a tribute made by the Italian artist Yuri Pomo. Usually specialized in the creation of images transposing celebrities into the visual universe of the series, Yuri Pomo wanted to pay tribute to George Floyd through these illustrations posted online a few days after his death.

They are thus found on his Instagram and Twitter accounts.

“Usually, I draw colorful and joyful illustrations but since I have a large audience, I plan to make the most of it when necessary to get something good out of my work. Especially right now. […] The Simpsons are part of everyone's childhood, so the message will be clear and strong. Imagine that you are watching The Simpsons with your daughter or your son and that suddenly this scene occurs in the episode, in all its cruelty, without jokes, without irony ", explains in particular the artist in one of his publications Instagram.

It is not the first time that false "predictions" are attributed to the series: in early March, a montage suggested that it had announced the coronavirus epidemic 27 years before it occurred.
