The temporary funeral home in Rungis (Val-de-Marne) to accommodate the deceased who died from the coronavirus will be closed "due to the positive development" of the epidemic in Ile-de-France, announced Saturday the Prefecture of Paris police.

In the midst of a health crisis, this center was opened on April 3 in a hall in the Rungis market to accommodate the coffins of victims of the epidemic, pending their burial or cremation.

No more new coffins since May 13

"The slowdown in the progression of the Covid-19 epidemic, observed for several weeks, continues in Ile-de-France," said the police headquarters in a statement. "Ile-de-France funeral operators are once again able to take care of all the coffins of the deceased".

The funeral home "has not welcomed any new coffins since Wednesday, May 13 to focus only on their gradual release," said the document. Another temporary “depository”, which opened in mid-April in Wissous (Essonne), was also closed on May 10.

Shortly after its opening, the Rungis site had been the subject of a controversy over the prices charged. The private operator OGF, to whom the PP had entrusted the establishment of the place, had finally announced that it would take "all the costs" after being under fire from critics.
