  • The Regional Council of New Aquitaine and the prefecture launched, this Friday, a digital platform for "witnesses or victims of gender-based and sexual violence."
  • The aim is to better understand and identify the increase in violence against women in the region during confinement.
  • The results should be made public in September 2020 and a regional observatory on violence against women could be created.

The Regional Directorate for Women's Rights and Equality and New Aquitaine wish to question the inhabitants of the region about domestic violence that occurred before or during the confinement period linked to the Covid-19 epidemic. Conducted by the research association on health, the city and inequalities (Aresvi), the survey is available online until July 31 on a dedicated digital platform and is addressed to "witnesses or victims of gender-based violence and sexual ”.

The responses will be treated anonymously by researchers and will allow a better understanding of domestic violence and the responses given to the victims. This survey is part of a broader action research funded by the State and the Region as part of the "Catherine" fund created by Marlène Schiappa, Secretary of State for Gender Equality and men and the fight against discrimination during the Grenelle of domestic violence. The results of this survey will be published in September 2020 and the work carried out could lead to the creation of a regional observatory on violence against women, explain the Region and the prefecture in a joint press release.

A 59% increase in interventions during confinement

During the confinement period, many events related to gender-based and sexual violence occurred in New Aquitaine, as everywhere in France. The gendarmerie thus intervened 3,367 times for domestic violence, an increase of 59% compared to the same period in 2019.

In Gironde, interventions for domestic violence increased by 25% in the police zone and by 28% in the gendarmerie zone only between March 17 and March 31. An edifying statement which prompted the lawyers of the Bordeaux bar to launch a free emergency line (05.57.77.40.71). Alert points have also been set up in some pharmacies and supermarkets, the Maison des Femmes has remained (and remains) listening, the alert SMS at 114 and 3919 are still there as the reporting platform of the government or the emergency reception cell for victims of aggression (Cauva).
