The Marineland animal park in Antibes (Alpes-Maritimes) has just announced the birth, last Friday May 29, of a dolphin weighing approximately 15 kg. It is the second birth in two months of a dolphin in the park.

Malou, a female dolphin in her forties, gave birth. He is his fifth baby. Double event for Malou since less than a month ago, she also became a grandmother.

On May 8, it was Nala, Malou's daughter, who gave birth to Lùa. It was the first time that a dolphin, born in Marineland, gave birth. Aged 10, the young mother was helped by a more experienced female, explains the park, namely her own mother, Malou, herself in full gestation.

Gestation in the female dolphin lasts a year. Marineland, the main dolphinarium in France, now has 12 twelve dolphins.

Anti-captives still mobilized

In addition, some NGOs are still contesting the reproduction of dolphins in captivity. In May 2017, Ségolène Royal, then Minister of the Environment, went in this direction by signing a decree prohibiting the reproduction of dolphins and orcas in France. The decree also provided for the increase in the size of the basins and the prohibition of chlorine in the treatment of water, with the aim in particular of "eliminating animal suffering".

Marineland then had to take contraceptive measures to prevent the reproduction of his animals. But in January 2018, the water parks had obtained from the Council of State the cancellation for procedural defect of this ministerial decree.
