CharlyBooks, contributor to the reading group "20 Minutes Books", recommends Un (e) secte  by Maxime Chattam, published on October 30, 2019 by Éditions Albin Michel.

His favorite quote:

"There are so many insects that we are just a drop of water facing an ocean. Did you know that for every human present on Earth, there are almost a billion and a half of insects? "

Why this book?

  • Because we feel a real research on the subjects approached by Maxime Chattam in his novels. The author always tries to be closer to reality while incorporating a fantastic touch or anticipation. It is also very rigorous in police procedures: the results of scientific analyzes are far from being instantaneous and the cops do not do what they want according to their intuitions.
  • Because Maxime Chattam always guarantees us our dose of chills. From the first chapter, the reader finds himself at the heart of the intrigue. If you are like me, not very comfortable with insects and other spiders, you will be even less in front of these small animals which turn into a deadly swarm. You won't risk looking at insects the same way, even the most adorable!

The essential in 2 minutes

The intrigue.  What is the connection between a young woman missing in New York and a bloody skeleton found in an abandoned zoo in Los Angeles? Between conspiracy theories, mysticism and multinationals, the resolution of these cases risks being sown with pitfalls.

Characters.  A detective who finds it difficult to gain respect in a macho environment. A lieutenant who hides his true personality behind pretenses for fear of feeling emotions. These two, who do not know each other and live at opposite ends of each other, could well thwart all forecasts.

Places.  From the less touristy neighborhoods of New York to the streets filled with homeless people in Los Angeles, passing by a Kansas city without backwater.

The time.  In the not-too-distant future, when Internet movements and research can be spied on by anyone with a little computer skills, and when companies have become more powerful than governments.

The author.  Maxime Chattam is a French author of thrillers and fantasy. We notably owe him The Trilogy of Evil , The Signal or the Other World saga , post-apocalyptic novels in which adolescents are the heroes in a world ravaged by the excesses of the past. He is also the godfather and president of the jury for the Prix 20 Minutes du roman which will be awarded at the end of the year.

This book was read while feeling some strange tingling…
