A passenger ferry which set off from Algiers on Monday with a thousand people on board arrived in Marseille at midday after the first crossing since the suspension of maritime links between France and Algeria due to the Covid pandemic. 19.

The Danielle Casanova , private company Corsica Linea, left the port of Algiers on Monday afternoon. He arrived in Marseille shortly after 1 p.m. Tuesday. With a capacity of more than 2,400 passengers and able to embark 700 vehicles, the ferry arrived empty in Algiers at 7 am Monday from Marseille.

The ship embarked expatriates and Algerians residing in France, stranded in Algeria for almost three months due to travel restrictions linked to the health crisis. Two other services should be provided next Sunday and Tuesday. Other connections are planned in the first half of June.

No ferry since March 19

Algeria has closed its maritime borders since March 19, the date on which an Algerian ferry had provided the last maritime link between Marseille and Algiers. About 1,700 people, stranded in France after the announcement of the confinement, had been repatriated to Algeria.

Flights have also been set up in recent days for the repatriation of French and Algerians with a residence permit in France.
