Hospitals and clinics will benefit from new aid in the face of the crisis, Secretary of State to Minister of Health Adrien Taquet announced on Tuesday. "A first national envelope of 377 million was allocated in April to compensate for the additional costs linked to the care of Covid patients," he reminded during questions to the government in the National Assembly.

This first budgetary extension, calculated on the basis of activity data for the month of March, will be supplemented by a second envelope "of 100 million euros", "allocated soon to establishments", added the Secretary of State. According to Adrien Taquet, this money "will reinforce and supplement the allocations allocated for the territories which have been most affected by the Covid (…), and this for all sectors of hospitalization, whether public or private". These budgetary envelopes are in addition to the 84.4 billion euros of hospital spending voted for 2020, according to the ministry.

Costs and loss of revenue

"I would also like to remind you that a funding guarantee has been put in place since March for all health establishments, in order to secure their cash flow and their revenue from activities which may have been declining," said Adrien Taquet. The French Hospital Federation (FHF) had estimated at the end of April between 600 and 900 million euros the additional costs linked to the coronavirus crisis for public hospitals.

In question: the investments necessary to equip beds in intensive care, buy protective equipment, tests, drugs, or even pay the additional hours of nursing staff and staff who come in for reinforcement. In addition to these additional costs, there were significant losses in revenue, linked to the deprogramming of procedures and the drop in patient numbers for pathologies other than the coronavirus.
