The plastic artist Christo who died on Sunday had "the madness of grandeur and the genius of splendor", reacted on Monday the Elysée Palace in a press release, welcoming works "which transformed the buildings and landscapes of the world into poetic events".

"The President of the Republic and his wife salute the work of this space poet with grandiose visions and offer his loved ones and his admirers their sad condolences," said this long press release.

"Christo was always looking for wonder everywhere"

Famous for his monumental achievements, including packaging monuments like the Pont-Neuf in Paris and the Reichstag in Berlin, born artist Christo Vladimirov Javacheff in Bulgaria died on Sunday at the age of 84.

"To test the grandeur of a monument or of a landscape, to absorb the gaze in the drapery and the waving of its fabrics, to dazzle by the liveliness and the shimmer of their colors: Christo was always and everywhere looking for wonder", adds the Elysée.

His years in Paris where he had settled in 1958 "were those of the birth of his talent, the invention of this gesture which would become his signature," he added. The exhibition dedicated to him by the Georges-Pompidou Center in Paris from July 1 “will then be like the homage of France to this artist whom she loved and who loved her,” says the Elysée.
