The mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo announced on Saturday the possibility for cafes, bars and restaurants to occupy part of the public space for free with their terraces, the only ones to be authorized in the capital to reopen on June 2 with the second stage of deconfinement.

"We adopted an aid plan for bars and restaurants for at least six months, from March to the end of September," said the outgoing mayor in the newspaper Le Parisien , less than a month before the second round of municipal elections. One of its flagship measures: "free occupation of part of the Paris area".

Sidewalks, parking spaces, streets…

"It can be sidewalks when possible or parking spaces," said the socialist mayor. “It can also be certain weekends closing a street to traffic to allow bars or restaurants to have more space. "

The only condition: online registration and compliance with a ten-point charter, including compliance with the sanitary protocol and cleanliness, closing of the terraces at 10 p.m. and limiting noise pollution for residents. Wishing to “start from a principle of trust”, the mayor of Paris said that she had nevertheless planned, in the event of breaches of this charter, “verbalization” and “withdrawal of the possibility of using the temporary terraces. "

"There are a lot of jobs at stake"

About twenty streets that can be temporarily closed to the circulation of cars to allow the extension of the terraces have been identified, as "Place des Vosges, around the Carreau du temple, Place Sainte-Marthe in the 10th, rue Lepic in the 18th century or the surroundings of the Ourcq canal ”. The majority of boroughs are concerned, according to Le Parisien.

Anne Hidalgo dismissed the accusations of some other candidates for mayor of Paris, including Rachida Dati (LR), of using the coronavirus crisis to campaign for the second round in late June: "It was my responsibility not to wait until June 28 to act. There are a lot of jobs at stake. ”

Asked about the newly created cycle paths to offer an alternative to the car and public transport, she said that she "did not want to go back: a new model is needed" to "fight against pollution" and "Avoid groupings".
