  • The weekend promises to be radiant in Brittany and the beaches should be acclaimed by the population.
  • The sub-prefect of Saint-Malo believes that the population has respected sanitary measures rather well. Only 120 PV have been drawn up since the deconfinement on the Emerald Coast.
  • Important checks will be carried out during the Pentecost weekend.

Twenty-five degrees, clear sky and light breeze from the east. In Saint-Malo, as in much of France, the Pentecost weekend promises to be radiant. Used to welcoming tens of thousands of visitors to each of the May bridges, the corsair city has been spared from mass tourism for almost three months. The blame for the coronavirus and the containment measures that have restricted the movement of French people.

At the dawn of a long weekend and a gradual deconfinement lifting travel restrictions, Saint-Malo and the Emerald Coast expect to see tourist flows return. Should we worry about it? The sub-prefect of Saint-Malo Vincent Lagoguey ensures that the situation is under control. “In Ille-et-Vilaine, the beach openings went well. There were some concerns after Ascension Thursday because there were a lot of people on the sand but it subsided afterwards. Overall, we observed compliance with the instructions ”. Unlike Morbihan or Finistère, no mayor asked to close their beaches.

"Nothing comparable to the usual May bridges"

The sub-prefect did the calculations. Since the deconfinement, around 120 tickets have been drawn up by the police and gendarmes on the Ille-et-Vilaine coast, where 66 dynamic beaches are open. "Most of the time, it was for gatherings of more than ten people." On the roads, very few motorists had defied the 100 km rule without authorization. According to local elected officials, there were a few people on their beaches but "nothing comparable to the usual May bridges" in "normal" years.

While Edouard Philippe announced the lifting of distance limit measures from June 2, does the long weekend look risky? “We are on a ridge path. There are positive messages that show that there is no epidemic rebound yet. This encourages confidence, but the virus is still circulating. Everyone is tempted to return to normal life but we must not let go, ”said the sub-prefect. Tourism professionals are awaiting the return of tourists. "Economic life must resume but we must secure the destination, ensure that the health situation remains under control," warns Vincent Lagoguey.

To ensure compliance with the rules, the prefecture mobilized the same security system this weekend. Police and gendarmes will patrol the coast and on the roads leading to it. Station checks will also be carried out for this last weekend of limited travel.
