Pollution with disposable masks: "Are we pigs?" - 20 Minutes

They litter the parking lots of supermarkets, sidewalks, gutters, rivers, and therefore now the Mediterranean. Earlier this week, Laurent Lombard, diver and founder of the association "Operation clean sea", published the images he had filmed off Cap d'Antibes.

They are edifying: the waters of the deep blue are already colonized by new types of unwanted pollutants, single-use protections (masks, gloves) against Covid-19. Not only damaging to nature, since their decomposition in nature would take 400 years, disposable masks are also - like gloves - potentially carrying pathogenic risks.

One gesture: in the trash!

And if they finish their race in the Mediterranean, it is because they have been thrown to the ground. So a simple gesture, to avoid this disaster: throw them in the trash! And in that of household waste, not in the yellow. Surgical masks are in fact made from polypropylene, a very dense thermoplastic… non-biodegradable and non-recyclable. The Ministry of Ecology also offers an information campaign recalling the rules for the treatment of used masks.

❌ Many of us see used masks thrown on the ground. However, it is simple to avoid this pollution by respecting the instructions⤵

Finally, remember that throwing litter on the public highway is punishable by a fine of 68 euros. This could be revised upwards, up to 300 euros if the bill from the deputy (LR) of the Alpes-Maritimes, Eric Pauget, is accepted.
