The deconfinement should undoubtedly be beneficial to children, but the need to see them return at least once to school before the long holidays is necessary, according to the Minister of National Education. On Europe 1 Friday, Professor Robert Cohen, pediatrician and infectious disease specialist, also judges that the well-being of students is at stake.

As we enter phase 2 of deconfinement, the Minister of National Education Jean-Michel Blanquer wants to accelerate the return of students to school, citing a "social emergency". The return to school in June is however not guaranteed for all children: many classes will remain closed. At the microphone of Europe 1 Friday, Professor Robert Cohen, pediatrician and infectious disease specialist in Créteil, also underlines the imperative nature of a return to school before the holidays.

"Let's not forget that there is going to be a vacation"

"The risk of not putting [children in school] is considerable from a social point of view," says Robert Cohen. According to him, this necessity is imposed in particular for the most fragile pupils, but more generally for all the children who suffer from confinement. The absence of "social contact" or "interaction with adults other than those of the family" is likely to disturb the personal construction of the youngest.

Without a return to school in June, many students would have to wait until the start of the new school year in September to take their lessons again. "Let us not forget that behind that there is going to be a vacation. They will therefore remain for several months without social interaction with other children who are not those of their families or close friends."

"If the minister rightly thinks it is an emergency, the health protocol will have to be changed," concluded the doctor.
