After hosting virtual concerts of prestigious artists during the containment (Steve Aoki, Travis Scott), the video game Fortnite broadcast to its players, live and in preview, the trailer for "Tenet", the next film by Christopher Nolan. A phenomenon that speaks volumes about the overflowing ambition of this game.

The world is changing on the Internet at breakneck speed and this is an amazing example. On Friday, the trailer for Tenet , the next film by acclaimed director InceptionThe Dark Knight and  Interstellar , Christopher Nolan, was released. But before being published on the Internet, it was broadcast ... in a video game. And not just any: Fortnite , the phenomenon of 250 million players.

A screen within a screen

It is inside the online game mode "Battle Royale", that the trailer for Tenet was released. A surreal scene: instead of trying to kill their opponents, as is the rule (the goal is to be the last survivor of a group of one hundred players), millions of players suddenly stopped two minutes to observe, through the eyes of their character, the trailer, broadcast on several screens distributed on the game map.

A few minutes before the rest of the Internet users, Fortnite  players  were able to discover a little more about the mysterious film by Christopher Nolan. Tenet , whose cast notably includes John David Washington and Robert Pattinson, is due to be released in July in France, provided that the coronavirus does not extend the deadline.

Virtual concerts for players

Fortnite is not the first time it has gained a glimpse in terms of cultural and marketing events. In April, in full confinement, the American rapper Travis Scott had given a virtual concert in the game. A 10-minute performance, recorded and reproduced thanks to a giant avatar of the artist. Twelve million players from around the world followed this new kind of concert, a record for an online concert, and made their characters dance to the rhythm of the music. Four other rapper's concerts followed, each with a large audience.

This success prompted Epic Games, the publisher of  Fortnite , to increase the number of concerts. At the beginning of May, during a "Fête Royale" organized in a specially dedicated game mode, players were able to attend a "DJ Set" by several artists, notably Steve Aoki and deadmau5. Never a game had known such a craze and this gigantic community attracts henceforth brands but also associations which organize all types of promotional and charitable events there.
