How to open doors to visitors in the safest possible way? It is the million dollar question in this phase of de-escalation that is underway in most of Europe. Well, the Duomo of Florence has taken a particularly innovative step .

From now on, when a visitor to the Italian city cathedral gets too close to another, a device around his neck will vibrate to warn him that he is breaching the safety distance.

The Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore, which manages the different monuments associated with the Florence cathedral, such as the Baptistery or Giotto's bell tower, already distributes these small devices (just seven centimeters long) free of charge to visitors, which are carried hung with a ribbon around the neck . If the minimum distance is exceeded they vibrate and light up. In the case of families that make the visit together it is possible to inhibit the alarm signal.

With this unprecedented measure, the cathedral aims to guarantee "security and an optimal quality of visit" after yesterday it reopened its doors after more than two months of closure, like the rest of monuments, museums and churches in Italy.

The devices, manufactured by the Florentine company Advanced Microwave Engineering (AME), are returned at the end of the visit and are properly disinfected before reuse.

Among the different spaces in which the use of this device will be mandatory is the dome of the cathedral, by Brunelleschi, or the Duomo Opera Museum, where Michelangelo's Piedad Bandini and several sculptures by Donatello are located.

At the moment, there are few who can enjoy these Renaissance jewels since, although Italy allows access to cultural sites, it is still not possible to move between different regions and the arrival of foreign tourists is still limited.
