Quarantines, bubbles, sanitary corridors, rapid tests for coronaviruses ... The map of European tourism is drawn these days with words that until now were not part of the travel dictionary. Little by little, however, the continent is taking steps towards a cautious de-escalation and this includes the reopening of borders. Countries like Iceland and Italy have given up on imposing mandatory isolation on tourists. Other countries have opted for mandatory quarantine.

ITALY

After the longest confinement in Europe, the Italian government is coming to life. It has also been one of the earliest to move to avoid the claw of the virus in tourism, its main source of income. Hence, entry into the country is already allowed without restrictions if it is done for specific economic or commercial reasons, which includes tourists. Its neighbor, Slovenia, has also suspended quarantines for all European citizens entering the country.

Greece

Beaches and internal transportation are already open in Greece, as well as iconic archaeological monuments like the Acropolis of Athens. National air traffic has also started to re-establish this week, while international air will gradually expand, according to Efe. At the moment, the Athens airport will be the only one to operate and the suspension of commercial air traffic with Spain, Italy, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands has been extended until June 1.

FRANCE

France aims to reopen "as much as possible" of its tourist areas from June 21 to start the summer season. The neighboring country does not impose quarantine, but it will do it for 14 days to those who enter from Spain, in reciprocity to the measure adopted by Madrid with all travelers arriving from abroad.

GERMANY

If the evolution of the pandemic allows it, Germany's goal is to remove travel restrictions in the Schengen area from June 15. In this country, the implementation of most of the measures adopted in the face of the crisis corresponds to each Land . Several of these Länder have already abolished the 14 days of isolation for citizens from other EU countries and the United Kingdom, as well as Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Switzerland.

PORTUGAL

Already in the second phase of its de-escalation, Portugal has opened schools, museums and restaurants (with capacity control). The authorities assure that "the return of tourism is not far" and some hotels have already reopened their doors. The beaches plan to welcome bathers from June. So far, only the island territories of the Azores and Madeira have imposed a mandatory 14-day quarantine.

The Swiss country keeps its doors closed to most foreigners. The borders with France, Germany and Austria (through which those with work permits on Swiss territory continue to pass) will be reopened on June 15.
