UFC-Que Choisir assigns 20 airlines for bad practices and deceptive announcements on reimbursements for flights canceled during the coronavirus epidemic - JP PARIENTE / SIPA

On April 24, UFC-Que Choisir gave notice to 57 airlines which denied the right to refund millions of passengers on canceled flights by imposing vouchers on them. If several of them have taken this warning into account by modifying their reimbursement terms, others have simply ignored it, considers the consumer association.

"Faced with the persistence of bad practices and the trompe l'oeil announcements", UFC-Que Choisir has therefore decided to bring 20 airlines to justice. The bad students are: Air France, Ryanair, Transavia France, Vueling Airlines, Lufthansa, Volotea, Air Algérie, Air Corsica, Royal Air Maroc, Air Caraïbes, Turkish Airlines, TAP Air Portugal, Tunisair, Norwegian, Emirates, Corsair KLM, Air Austral, Air Europa and Air Transat.

Discrimination and misleading messages

In a statement, the UFC said that some companies make consumers believe that the particular pandemic situation would allow them to offer only one voucher. The right to choose between a refund or a credit for passengers on canceled flights was however firmly recalled by the European Commission. Other companies agree to reimburse their passengers but suspend payment until an indefinite date, or even after the end of the health crisis.

UFC-Que Choisir notably points the finger at Air France KLM, which limits the right to reimbursement for only flights canceled after May 15. "It is not acceptable for consumers to be discriminated against according to the date of cancellation, the latter being moreover fixed at the discretion of the airline," said the press release.
