China has confirmed that early in the coronavirus pandemic it destroyed samples of Covid-19 . This was pointed out by the supervisor of the National Health Commission of China, Liu Dengfeng , who has admitted that the country ordered the removal of the samples "in unauthorized laboratories" at the beginning of January.

Liu said it was done " for laboratory safety and to prevent future disasters from unidentified pathogens."

However, the announcement confirms the United States' allegations. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has repeatedly pointed out that China refused to give samples of the virus taken from patients infected with Covid-19 in late 2019.

At a briefing in Beijing last Friday, Liu Dengfeng insisted that the destruction was not done to cover up or hide samples from other countries, but for biosafety.

"The statements made by some US officials were taken out of context and were intended to be confusing," he said.

Likewise, Liu replied that the destructions fully comply with Chinese sanitary laws, since they stipulate that laboratories that do not meet the necessary requirements must destroy the samples they possess.
