A veterinarian by training and a virologist by passion, Ilaria Capua (Rome, 1966) has spent most of her professional life dedicated to investigating viral infections in animals that can be transmitted to people. She is best known for her studies of the influenza virus - specifically avian influenza - and for daring in 2006 to challenge the system, by releasing the genetic sequence of the first African strain of H5N1 influenza on a database of freely accessible data.
