Martin and Khalil continue to invest the street for TikTok - Martin Bodenheimer

  • Martin and Khalil are 19 years old and publish dance videos shot on the street on TikTok.
  • If the feedback is positive on TikTok, the hateful comments were paraded on Twitter.
  • Not enough to taint the good humor of two best friends who intend to share their passion as long as possible.

For the past month, Martin and Khalil “have been living their best lives. One is in the last year of training to be a sports coach, and the other is in the second year of DUT in mechanical engineering. Aged 19, they started on TikTok, smiling, to share their passion for dance. Armed with their phones, the two best friends do not dance and carried to the street in Paris. From the first video, the success was immediate. Proof of their success, their performances cross social networks and land on Twitter.

While the rave comments are linked on TikTok, the melody is not the same on Twitter, where the insults begin to rain. The accomplice looks that Martin and Khalil dare to exchange disturb some of the internet users who reveal in them an element of toxic masculinity. It does not matter for the two acolytes who take advantage of their little notoriety. In less than a month, their videos have accumulated more than 6.6 million views on TikTok and have already caught the eye of a festival that wants to broadcast them for their promotional campaign. The two spoke with 20 Minutes about their passion, how they created these videos, and the reviews they receive.

How did you come up with the idea of making these videos?

Khalil  : We've been better friends for a long time and we always said that we had to do something together. During the confinement, we met one evening and, on a whim, we made a TikTok. The first video was a hit and we decided to continue.

Martin  : Basically, we love dancing, but we're just evening dancers. We think we have the rhythm, so we thought it would be a good idea to do it.

What are the steps when shooting a video?

Khalil  : We surf on TikTok and as soon as there is music that may interest us, we listen to it each on our own. Inspiration comes on its own, everyone gives their ideas and it gives a nice mix at the end.

Martin  : If there are steps that I don't like or vice versa, we will make sure we both like it. We are quite perfectionists, so as soon as there is something wrong, we redo the video. It takes 15 to 20 minutes to find the choreography and then it can take us one to two hours to do it. If these are complicated steps, we will take longer.

You didn't respect the barrier gestures too much during confinement ...

Martin  : We pretty much did containment together. We were a little outlaw, but the game was worth the candle ( laughs ). We stayed less than a kilometer from home.

Khalil  : On our first video, we are on a different street but the neighbors told us that we were making too much noise so we stopped. We moved to another street, where the neighbor is super cool, we chatted with her. We can put our phone on a small step, and that's perfect. We live five minutes apart, and it's right in the middle.

One million likes, 6 million views on TikTok… How do you explain it?

Khalil  : On TikTok, you can be seen very quickly without having many subscribers. The duo we formed and our good humor made people love it. In comments, at least on TikTok, we always have positive comments.

Martin  : We do what we are, and what we like. We are not fooling around and we represent this on our videos.

On social networks, two camps clashed: those who loved it, and those who threw insults at you ...

Khalil  : When I saw myself on Twitter, I told myself that we had become someone ( laughs ). How can we not be happy when we are talking about us? Insulting comments, I don't pay attention at all. These are frustrated people who send this.

What do you say to those who say that dancing is not for guys?

Khalil  : Dance is what we are. We are both heterosexual, but I don't think a way of dancing can speak for us. Those who take it the wrong way are people who can't bear to see two guys dancing together. But Martin, he's my best friend, I have no embarrassment to dance any dance whatsoever with him. If they don't like it, it's not my problem.

Critics don't seem to have tarnished your zest for life…

Khalil  : If we have to stop at the critics, no one will ever move forward. There will necessarily be haters. If we want to do something that we like, we do it to the end because we will have so much positive behind that we will not see the negative. They are not calculated at all. They are frustrated people who criticize and cannot bear to see people doing what they like.
