• Government Plan. Aid to culture is converted into soft loans

21 Spanish artists, all winners of the National Art and Velázquez Awards (the two awards granted by the Ministry of Culture), have sent a letter to the Government in which they reproach their inattention to contemporary art in its program of aid to the cultural industry : "Faced with the measures adopted by the Ministry of Culture, and specifically, those that concern contemporary art, we are alarmed at the lack of sensitivity and understanding towards our work (creation, art, history) and towards what contemporary art means within the economic fabric through the numerous companies and freelancers that comprise it. "

The artists' complaint comes a week after gallery owners associations raised a similar complaint, aggrieved by the shortage of direct aid to their sector, compared to those approved for cinema and the performing arts. "With committed effort and dedication, we provide artists, gallery owners, curators and researchers , each from their own language, an open and enriching vision of culture, necessary and perhaps more than ever, of our country at this time. It is serious that the Ministry of Culture does not consider it this way given the meager and ridiculous amount designated for projects and the exercise of professionals. It is also worrying and generates confusion, the suppression of the General Subdirectorate for the Promotion of Fine Arts that only deepens our conviction of ignorance and lack of interest towards the sector ".

The signatories of the document are some of the great protagonists of recent art in Spain: Antonio López, Eva Lootz, Luis Gordillo, Carmen Calvo, Antoni Muntadas, Miquel Navarro ... "At a time when there is talk of returning to normality, we consider that the role of culture will be essential and decisive and therefore it will be new or it will not be, "concludes his letter.
