The Ministry of the Environment has compiled data and opinions at a review meeting by experts, saying that the requirements for public support for the construction of coal-fired power plants overseas need to be revised more stringently. In the future, we will show it to relevant ministries as a basis for discussion.

Regarding the support for the construction of coal-fired power plants overseas, the government has set four requirements that limit the cases covered by the support, but international criticism has been issued for providing public support.

Last month, the Ministry of the Environment set up a study group of experts and had a discussion to review the support requirements to be more stringent, and summarized the views on the 14th.

In this paper, various data are presented, including that it is said that coal-fired power generation emits twice as much greenhouse gas as natural gas, even considering future technological developments.

In addition, it says that it is necessary to provide policy support to the partner country in order to transition to a decarbonized society when exporting infrastructure, and the export of coal-fired power generation is in a very competitive environment without public support. Pointed out that risk assessment from a longer-term perspective, such as changes in the energy situation and financial trends, is required.

The government is planning to compile the outline of the export strategy for infrastructure systems from next year onwards next month, and the Ministry of the Environment wants to present the data and views compiled by the study group to relevant ministries and agencies to use as a basis for discussion.
