A regulatory authority in the health care sector in Russia has announced the discontinuation of the use of a specific type of Russian medical ventilator, manufactured after April 1, after two fires that broke out in two hospitals.

The Venta-M ventilator was used in St. George's Hospital in St. Petersburg, where five people died in Tuesday's fire, and also in a hospital in Moscow where a fire that killed one person took place on Saturday.

The health care watchdog in Russia said it will check the quality and safety of respirators in the two hospitals.

St. Petersburg Hospital said it would stop using this type of device at the moment while the manufacturer urged people to avoid hurrying to conclusions.

On Wednesday, Russia recorded 10028 confirmed new cases of Coronavirus, taking the total in the country to 242271, and it has become the second most infected country in the world after the United States.

The Corona Crisis Center said 96 people had died on Tuesday night, bringing the official death toll to 2,212.
