They are now only four cities that can claim the title of European Green Capital, awarded by the European Union. Of the 17 postulants at the start. If the candidacy of Lyon was ultimately not retained to access the last square, that of Grenoble, on the other hand, won over the jurors.

The capital of Isère will have to do battle with Dijon, Tallinn in Estonia and Turin in Italy. The final vote should take place at the end of the year. This prize aims to reward cities that fulfill ambitious environmental and sustainable development objectives and that can act as a model to lead other cities in their wake.

350,000 euros at stake

The jury will decide according to 12 criteria: the local contribution to the fight against global climate change, transport, urban green spaces, noise, production and waste management, nature and biodiversity, air, water consumption, wastewater treatment, eco-innovation and sustainable employment, environmental management by local authorities and energy performance.

Eric Piolle, EELV mayor of Grenoble, welcomed this selection and also indicated that the city was well positioned since, according to him, it would rank first or second out of 11 of the 12 themes.
