Paul Verhoeven is working on a contemporary, French-language television adaptation of Guy de Maupassants Bel Ami . That announced the Paris-based producer Saïd Ben Saïd via Twitter.
The film adaptation consists of a French-language eight-part television series.
Bel Ami is set in nineteenth century France and is about the rise of the unscrupulous, flirtatious journalist Georges Duroy, known to his admirers as Bel Ami. He also comes face to face with the reality of the corrupt society in which he lives - the disheveled colleagues, the manipulative mistresses and cunning financiers - and quickly learns to become an arch-seducer, blackmailer and social climber in a world where love is only is a means to an end.
Gerard Soeteman writes the screenplay of the series. Verhoeven previously worked with Soeteman for classics such as Turkish delight , Spatters and Soldier van Oranje .
The 81-year-old director has never made it a secret that he would like to direct Bel Ami .
