Canceled because of the coronavirus, the Cannes Film Festival still plans to live on the big screen. Among the organizers' lines of thought, a "Cannes 2020" label on movie posters, or even projections at other events, such as the Venice Film Festival or the Berlinale.

It was to start on Tuesday. Canceled like many other cultural events because of the coronavirus, the 2020 edition of the Cannes Festival should not "draw the curtain", confirmed to Le Figaro its president, Pierre Lescure. Consideration is still underway to bring to life the largest film festival in the world, deprived of Croisette this year, but the organizers already have some ideas.

A "Cannes 2020" label for films

The usual labels "Palme d'or", "Prix du jury" or "Sélection Un certain regard" could give way on the posters to a more sober "Cannes 2020" during theatrical releases of the films concerned. In this way, in addition to bringing the name of the Festival to life, it would attract an audience that is used to trusting the institution. But the organizers are also thinking about showing films at event evenings, or even during other festivals, such as the Venice Film Festival, the Berlinale, or even the Tiff in Toronto.

"We agree on the principle of doing something together, but we question the form it should take," says Pierre Lescure about Venice. Thierry Frémaux, the Festival's general delegate, said that he wanted to "present films together".

Spike Lee, president of the 2021 edition

For his part, the American director Spike Lee, who was to chair the 2020 edition, has already informed the organizers that he was ready to (re) put on his costume in 2021, if the sanitary conditions are at the rendezvous -you. As for the finances of the Festival, it has an "endowment fund" of the order of 20 million euros for exceptional situations. Pierre Lescure estimating the loss between 5 and 10 million euros, so it seems that this is only a bad time to pass for the institution, but that it should recover.
