While a Chinese study recently found that the sperm of several people who contracted the coronavirus was positive, Dr. Jimmy Mohamed answers Sabrina, a listener who wonders if Covid-19 can be sexually transmitted.

Is the coronavirus sexually transmitted? This is what one might think of reading the results of a Chinese study published on May 7, which points to traces of Covid-19 in the sperm of certain patients. Something to worry Sabrina, a listener who wonders if the coronavirus can be caught following sexual intercourse.

In the morning of Europe 1 this Monday, doctor Jimmy Mohamed, who also officiates daily in the health show " Sans Rendez-vous ", answers him.

Conflicting studies ...

"It is true that the question arises," admits the doctor. "Especially since we realized that there were coronavirus receptors in the testes, and that some patients had felt symptoms. Studies have also succeeded in showing Covid-19 in some bodily fluids like stool, urine, or tear duct. " But if several studies have been conducted on the sexual route, they are "contradictory," says Jimmy Mohamed. "In one, there is no trace of the virus in the sperm, while the other demonstrated the presence of the coronavirus in 15% of the subjects who presented a severe form."

... but a risk due to the close distance

Should we therefore deduce that there is a risk of transmission during a sexual act? "We don't know, more studies will be needed," said the doctor. On the other hand, he points out that "in principle, sexual intercourse implies a distance of less than a meter for more than a quarter of an hour". Even if Covid-19 is not sexually transmitted, it is still possible "to get sick in other ways".
