After all, I have studied history and thought of the "biography" commonly used in history books, which is about to write Xu Zhimo as an era. Write his whole life, use "Ben Ji" (later changed to "Ben Zhuan"), write detailed historical facts, use "Legend of Biography" (later changed to "friend"), his life is listed, it is regarded as "table", his The works are listed as "Zhi". In the autumn of 1997, "The Biography of Xu Zhimo" has completed the "Birth" section. I heard that I was writing "Xu Chuan", and the Tianjin People's Publishing House asked me to ask me if I would like to compile a "Complete Collection of Xu Zhimo" for them. Thinking about the idea, it should be that since he is writing "Xu Chuan", he must have mastered many of the original works of Xu Zhimo, and compiling a new set of complete works is not difficult. Indeed, I have gone to the Beijing Library and Shanxi Library to find and copy a lot of materials. Xu Zhimo's master's thesis at Columbia University also asked friends to copy it back. Like a photocopy of "Morning Supplement", I just bought it back. Whether to finish the biography first and then compile the complete works, or to compile the complete works first and then complete the biographies, I immediately decided to compile the complete works first. No matter how good the biography is, it is just a book by someone Han, and the compilation of "Xu Zhimo's Complete Works" is a famous mountain career that can be encountered but not sought.

At that time, there were three kinds of "Complete Works of Xu Zhimo", which were published by Taiwan, Hong Kong and Guangxi. Not necessarily for Xu Zhimo. There is another way, that is, all works are arranged by year and month to become the "year of the writing department". This type of editing is most suitable for ancient writers, with not many works, two or three hundred thousand words, it is not difficult to do. For Xu Zhimo, the multi-million-word works, novels, poems and prose are all mixed together, and they appear to be unclear.
Thinking again and again, I feel that it is still the right way to use the "classification chronicle". In this respect, Lu Xun has a unique insight, once said: "Classification is good for speculation, and chronology is good for understanding the current situation. If you know the world, it is necessary to look at the corpus of the chronology." "Preface") He said that there is only one kind, if both are considered, classified and chronological, is it not the best of both worlds?

The classification is easy to say, the important thing is the chronology. What I want to do must be the chronology in the strict sense. The year follows the month, and the month follows the day. The most important thing is that I set a strict standard for myself. Those looking for books should look for the first prints published in Shanghai (the first prints of Xu ’s works are all in Shanghai). If this is not possible, the best option is also used. That segment was really busy, but it was really exciting. By 2016, the Commercial Press published the "Yuanshan-Xu Zhimo Lost Works Collection" collected by Chen Jianjun and Xu Zhidong, and the collection of more than 100 poems and articles. I know that the time for the new edition of "Complete Works of Xu Zhimo" is ripe. After more than two years of meticulous work by the publishing house, he finally completed the 10-volume edition of the "Complete Works of Xu Zhimo" in Beijing Business Edition. The Beijing Business Edition is fully concentrated. It ’s needless to say that the supplements are added. Another important thing is to correct many errors in the 8-volume book. Of course, this is not to say that there is nothing wrong with the new edition, and this is impossible. However, it will be more and more a few times, and there will always be fewer and fewer.
